That weird period we call "August"
Say goodbye to Summer, and get your closet ready for Autumn.
It’s like, everything kinda comes to a slow crawl all of a sudden, without literally any warning. All of sudden everyone is busy. Parties go from go from every weekend to just holiday weekends “Hey, what you doing for labor day?”. Instagram posts slows to a crawl. Tables and counters once littered with red solor cups, now littered with notebooks, laptops, and pens. Malls and streets empty as schools fill. And in the midst of all of this, somehow before you notice you’re reaching for a cardigan or a light jacket……… Yes, it’s that time again.
Time to swap out the shorts and crop tops for my jeans, long sleeves and jackets. find a way to squeeze my coats and winter clothes into my closet (jackets just take up so much space. Living in the South and with global warming I only get about 2 months of winter (not complaining at all actually I have a slight complaint that global warming will kill us) so, my preparation for fall isn’t much. Down here it’s pretty much Summer until its Winter. But, as a girl who enjoys fashion and dressing, I see Autumn as a fun period where you can mix seasons (Summer + Winter). With that being said
Here’s how I prepare my closet for Autumn
Colors
Summer was all about bright and loud colors. Fruit colors, if you will (granny smith apple, kiwi, strawberries, mango, orange, pineapple). However, it’s time to prepare for the arrival of fall and I am no different than the leaves on a tree. A change in colors is one of the first steps I take when accepting that summer is indeed
overcoming to an end. I trade my hot pink for shades of purple, my bright oranges turn into a burnt orange and sienna. my lime greens transition to olive greens and so on and so forth.Boots & Long Sleeves
You ever look at a picture and go “Is it hot, or is it cold?”? Well, it’s fall and I love it! Maybe it’s the Florida in me, but I just love a long sleeve top paired with shorts. Whether it’s a long sleeve shirt, or a jacket it always signals “autumn” to me. Warm enough to wear shorts and an ocean breeze consistent enough to keep you content and unbothered by the sleeves extending down to your wrists. I but away a lot of my baby tees and put my long sleeves (crop) tops front and center. Flip flops and sandals are usually paired with these types of outfits and if i’m on the beach, near some water, or running a quick mundane errand then sure that’s okay. However, i’m not only fashionably inclined but I love being extra and I love to turn an outfit into a LOOK. So, flip flops rarely suffice for me, honey! Everyone knows the shoe of the season are boots, and If you don’t know now you know! Heeled boots, combat boots, leather boots, fur boots, platform boots, knee high boots, ankle boots, as long as they’re not UGG boots!Accessories
I have enough clothes to where I really don’t need to do a clothing haul just because the season has changed. Instead I set my focus on updating and adding to my accessories. Trading out my bucket hats for skullies, my silk slips/ scarfs for cotton, and wool ones instead, suddenly caring about socks and their length and variety in colors. Each season has their staples, but most clothing transcends seasons. It’s the way you wear it and what you’re wearing it with that will make it “in season” or “out of season”.
This is how I prep and switch my wardrobe from season to season, in this case Summer to Autumn. Not only does it free up space in my closet, it also helps ensure that I wear all my clothes (and not just the same six things), and stops me from buying things that I already have (as well as knowing what it is that I am needing to buy). It also serves as a ritual to me in a way, gracefully letting go of Summer and embracing all the things Autumn brings and represents.
